History: Red Tails "Rise Above." With one of the few remaining original Tuskegee Airmen in attendance, Cadet Squadron 20 officially changed its moniker from Trolls to Red Tails during a renaming ceremony at Polaris Hall on 21 September 2024. Col. (Ret.) James Harvey III, who is 101 years old, received a standing ovation when he was introduced by keynote speaker, Gen. (Ret.) Robin Rand '79. Gen. Rand, former commander of the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing, spoke of the Red Tails' legacy and accolades during World War II, to include their 15,000+ combat sorties, 112 enemy air-to-air kills, 262 enemy aircraft destroyed, 96 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 60 Purple Hearts, to name a few. Red tailfins distinguished the aircraft flown by Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American pilots to serve in the United States military during that conflict. The squadron was segregated when it was created. – USAFA Association of Graduates
